Madalyn is 21 months old!
Seriously? My kid is nearly 2? Doesn't seem right, but here we are! The last 3 months have been a series of ups and downs. The ups were great - this is such a fun age. The downs were not so fun - teething is a cruel joke on toddlers. So is "cold and flu season." We're getting through it, though, and lately things have been "up," so that's good. Looking back at the last update (18 months), things sounded about the same - lots of sickness and lots of teething. So we've been dealing with both of these for 6 months? Yikes. 4 more teeth to go (the 2nd year molars are all she has left now that all 4 of her canines have poked through the surface), and it's summer now, so hopefully the colds are on break now, too.
Her biggest developments these last few months have definitely been with language. At 18 months, she was just starting to use 2 word statements, but mostly was communicating one word at a time. Now, she uses full sentences most of the time. We actually have conversations! The other day, she came over to me, rubbing her knee. I asked, "What happened to your knee?" She said, "I bonked it on the bunny's cage!" Amazing, my little baby is talking like a grown up.
She's also been growing a lot recently. They say that growth slows down around this age, but I don't know. Pants we bought her 3 weeks ago are too short. She's definitely getting taller and thinner, with her giant buddha belly going away and her chubby arms thinning out. It's sad, she looks like a little kid now instead of the chubby baby. Her cheeks are still fat like a chipmunk's, though. :)
She's been thriving at daycare. She knows several of her colors, and I've observed her count to 6! I haven't gotten her to replicate it, so I don't know that she knew what she was doing, but still. She can also reliably identify the letters U and O. They do a lot of teaching at daycare, and the other kids are older than she is so she benefits from the activities that they do, I think. It's nice to see that she really enjoys it, too.
She likes songs now, which for a long time were not at all interesting to her. The ones she demands most are "Wheels On the Bus", which she tries to sing, but she only knows the verse that involves monkeys on the bus jumping up and down, and she just sings, "Monkeys! Up and Down! Monkeys! Bus!" But she clearly thinks she's singing the song to a T. It's cute. She also likes a song on the Music Together CD called "Hello, Everybody." She calls this song "Body", and almost every time we're in the car she'll request it by shouting, "I WANT BODY!" So cute.
As for food, she's gotten to the stage where she isn't much interested in vegetables. She'll eat a few green beans, and maybe some corn, but mostly she sticks to fruits, breads (she loves bagels, but thinks we have to eat them while sitting on the porch, which is what we were doing the first time I gave her one), chicken nuggets, and her beloved waffles.
If nothing else, this age will be remembered as the period of time when Madalyn totally messed up her sleeping habits. Her whole life, she's been a great sleeper. Suddenly, the last few months have been touch and go. While she was sick, we really indulged her (I think she needed it), and now we're working on getting her back to being able to go to sleep on her own. Besides that, though, she also just seems to need/want less sleep right now. We extended her bed time a little bit, which seemed to help, but this morning for example, she was up at 6:15 AM (her norm has been somewhere around 7:30 for the last year or so). I don't mind it so much, and it's kind of nice - I bring her to our bed and we snuggle for a half hour, or watch Curious George on PBS. She will stay quiet until she sees one of us sit up, then she looks at us with her huge brown eyes and, without fail, says, "HI!" with this huge grin. It's those little things that make this age so wonderful.
So, hard to believe but the next update will be on her 2nd birthday! See you then.
Highlights:
-Visits from Aunt Jenny, Uncle Jeff, and Baby Avery
-"I want Body!"
-Her new bike and helmet
-Graduating to size 5 diapers - the largest size! I guess potty training is next?
-Finally having enough hair for pigtails ("pretty!")
-The wearing of sunglasses (usually upside down)
-Running "whheeeee!" down the small hill in our backyard
-Dancing and singing "It's raining, it's pouring" on our back deck in the rain
-The way she says "Peek-a-boo" (sounds more like "boo-ka-coo")
-The Earth Day march at daycare, where the kids wore paper sack jackets and carried signs that said "Give a hoot, don't pollute!" while marching around the block (I've got to get pictures from Allison of this - it was so, so cute. I happened to be there that day, and they got all kinds of waves and honks from passersby)
-Sleeping on a pillow for the first time ("piw-wo")
